What a Small Cat Needs by Natalia Shaloshvili, translated by Lena Traer
I love this little cat. Her sweet, surprised face. Her paws! How tiny she is! Those funky gulls on every page... what a delight. What a Small Cat Needs is kind of a perfect title — it invites you immediately to wonder, "what DOES a small cat need?" The book explains what a small cat needs; a tail, a saucer of milk, an umbrella, a home... and finally, a someone to hold her. I will admit I had to read the book a few times to really understand the full story. My first read was

Warriors Graphic Novel: The Prophecies Begin written by Erin Hunter, illustrated by Natalie Riess and Sara Goetter
Back in 2024, I attended an official Warriors Graphic Novel release party at a Barnes & Noble. The event boasted fun swag, fellow fans, and trivia. I predicted that the event would be a mix of nostalgic Gen Z/millennials, and a bunch of 8 to 14-yr-olds. I was right. Several of the kids wore custom cat masks. Some of the adults had official plush and merch. I asked a woman if the plush hanging out of her purse was Cinderpelt, and she scoffed and called me a fake fan. Which is,

The Island of Last Things by Emma Sloley
The first thing to be said about this novel is that the cover is one of the most striking, incredible covers I have ever seen. On a gold background, a furious panther bites a gentle, guiding hand. The absurdity of the panther’s tongue curling around the arm, the bright animal fear in the panther’s eyes... The teeth! This incredible illustration is not an ancient masterpiece (as I first assumed), but a work done by artist Jose David Morales, whom you can follow on Instagram at

Warriors Super Edition: Hawkwing's Journey written by Erin Hunter
SPOILERS for Warriors: A Vision of Shadows #1 through # 6. I just finished Hawkwing's Journey and cannot believe how incredibly miserable it was. Not miserably written — genuinely the entire book is just one misery after another. Hawkwing's Journey chronicles SkyClan's second exile (the first having taken place far before the original books start). SkyClan are betrayed by a loner with dark intentions and eventually made into a wandering, homeless band of cats losing their

Late Today written by Jungyoon Huh, illustrated by Myungae Lee, translated by Aerin Park
Late Today has been on my radar since I first saw it advertised in Shelf Awareness. Late Today is a translated picture book about a kitten who finds itself in rush hour traffic in Seoul, South Korea. I lived in Korea for about 4 years, so I'm always excited to see a book-in-translation from Korea! I was able to get both the English translation and the original Korean, which was a real treat! I love how different the covers are... it just goes to show how much book covers are

Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus illustrated by Cindy Szekeres
In 1897, a child named Virginia O'Hanlon wrote in to the New York Sun to ask if there truly was a Santa Claus. Sun writer Francis Pharcellus Church wrote a n Editor's Letter so charming that it sparked a cultural moment! (Library of Congress, https://guides.loc.gov/chronicling-america-yes-virginia ). It has been adapted into several picture books and even a song. You can read the full response on the Library of Congress website. "Is There a Santa Claus?" September 21, 1897.

Shibu's Tail by Tess Thomas, illustrated by Kamwei Fong
The first thing that stood out to me about Shibu’s Tail was the cover — how enormous is that titular tail! How much of the cover it takes up! The textured cat on the cover feels exactly how Shibu looks. (You might also notice the blue sticker announcing "Sara ❤️'s this." I bought this copy at Carmichael's Kids in Kentucky, and bookseller Sara recommended the book!) The first spread is so charming — Shibu stares right out at you. Can't you imagine little readers reaching
